It’s a simple equation…

Nightclub in Eastern Europe + Fashion photographer + Two gorgeous models + an orbis™ system = Spectacular photos.

The orbis™ arm Virtual Launch Party

February 5th, 2010

At the end of last year we invited everyone with an orbis™ to a Virtual Launch Party for the orbis™ arm, now available worldwide.

Fila Halloween Shoot Halloween Hootenanny LuluLemon Halloween 2009

Throwing our own global launch party was going to require a Trump-sized budget. So we threw out the idea to everyone through flickr and elsewhere to shoot any party with an orbis™, post the results to flickr and the results would become the Virtual Launch Party, full of fast’n’ easy shadowless light.

The results are finally in! My excuse for the delay was a new addition to my family that addled my brain and shocked my eardrums, and a whole heap of work to do on my next Strobist-inspired invention.

We couldn’t decide on one winner to rule them all, so came down to two. The first stood out for its colour, charisma and ‘leap off the page’ quality. The second winner just puts you right in the middle of what must have been a super-fun party, with a little perfectly balanced ambient light to tick the “technically accomplished” box.

So I guess you want to see the winners ? First up, let’s step into Christopher Goette’s glamorous life with.. Read the rest of this entry »

2010 ahoy, orbis™ wins a POP award !

January 13th, 2010

A big, ginormous HAPPY NEW YEAR to you, if you celebrated it recently. If not, best wishes. I’ll keep this “2009 was an amazing year” thing brief as I’m getting bored of reading so many online roundups. But this is worth saying; something I invented in the back of my garage a few years ago launched globally in early 2009 and as the year came to a close won one of the most prestigious photo-accessory design awards; a Popular Photography and popphoto.com POP Award ! On top of the hundreds of great testimonials we got last year, the orbis™ winning a POP award crowned an amazing 2009. And it gives me a huge anticipation of how magic 2010 will be. So thankyou for the part you played in all this, either by being an orbis™ photographer or perhaps just a reader of the blog.

new orbis™ videos - CLS setup and more

December 8th, 2009

After receiving quite a few emails from people around the world asking me about off-camera cords and setting up the Nikon wireless flash “CLS” system, I set to work and put together a couple of instructional videos. If you want to know more about getting your flash off the hotshoe to get cool side lighting and shadowless orbis™ ringflash photos, check them out. First up,  setting up Nikon’s CLS, with the off-camera cord video after the jump.

You can find both of these videos and more at our Youtube channel, including a fun little short timelapse film I recently uploaded. I’ve got more videos planned over the next couple of months so stay tuned!

italian orbis™ fashion shoot - behind the scenes

December 4th, 2009

A while back I interviewed Italian fashion photographer Massimo Zanigni, after I’d spotted him posting some very polished, beautifully shadowless photography to the orbis™ ring flash flickr group. It turns out he’s a pro photographer who scored an assignment for a big Italian fashion label, Magilla, shooting none-other than gorgeous Italian celebrity Rafaella Fico. You can read the interview we did here.

The other day, excited to be using his new orbis™ arm, Massimo emailed me to let me know about three behind-the-scenes videos from the Magilla campaign. I thought you’d be interested to see them, so without further ado you’ll find them below. If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like to shoot a beautiful model in a stunning Venetial palace with an orbis™, you’ve come to the right place. Bravo Massimo !

Moustache + November = MOVEMBER !

November 27th, 2009

Stephen A's Movember Montage

Movember is an annual month-long charity event where men around the world grow a moustache to raise funds to improve awareness of men’s depression and find a cure for Prostate cancer. Movember was started in 2003 by a group of Australian friends and since then has spread to New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, the USA and the UK.

What’s this got to do with the orbis™ ring flash, I hear you ask ?

Australian photographer Stephen Antonopoulos has been documenting his moustache-growing Read the rest of this entry »

Orbis Ring Flash during Photo Plus Expo 2009 from John Harrington on Vimeo.

Read on for the story behind the interview…. I’ve been a fan of John Harrington for a few years now. He is the author of the best book I’ve ever read on how to run a photography business, entitled “Best Business Practices for Photographers”. Before I invented the orbis™ ring flash, BBPfP changed the way I looked at running my photography business, and for the better. In a nutshell, JH’s book helped me alter my focus from being a guy with a camera, to being a business that provided (still does every now and then) photographic and imaging solutions for companies. And on occasion individuals too. That may sound trite, but with that change of focus I found a heightened ability to… Read the rest of this entry »

PDN PhotoPlus Debrief 1

October 28th, 2009

PhotoPlus Expo 2009

What an absolutely crazy week it was, showcasing the orbis™ ringflash at PDN’s PhotoPlus show in NYC, getting interviewed by none other than John Harrington, stabbing myself in the rear-end, losing half a tooth and lots and lots of great conversations with orbis™ ring flash shooters present and future. I’ll cover it in a couple of posts, otherwise it’s going to be a looong old read. First up, the show and the strange tooth hiccup.

Olivia Christine, Framed.

Day 1 Photoplus was, as is often the case, a little quiet as people get into the swing of things. A lot of people at the show on the first day take their time to walk the floor before it gets crowded on days 2 and 3. As I mentioned, I hooked up with the beautiful  Olivia Christine to model for me, who worked like a trooper throughout the show as I ran hundreds and hundreds of people through the easy orbis™ 1-2-3.

1- Get your flash to fire off-camera 2-Bring it up in front of the lens and 3- hit the shutter for beautiful, shadowless light anywhere, every time.

Anyway, there we were, Olivia and I, munching our way through the best tradeshow-hall food I’ve ever had (take note Photokina bratwurst vendors) when…

the orbis™ hits New York for Photoplus and a new video!

October 24th, 2009

I’m in New York and will be on stand #662 running demos throughout PDN’s fantastic Photoplus show. Photos and an update to follow tomorrow, but if you’re in NYC, make sure you come and say “Hi”. We’ve got the new orbis™ ring flash arm on the stand which so far has been met with a great reception from everyone who’s come by. We’re working with the gorgeous Olivia Christine from ModelMayhem too. Pics to follow! I forgot my G10 in my friend’s apartment yesterday but it’s ready to go today.

Yesterday was, ermm, eventful to say the least. Standing in the middle of our tradeshow stand, I went to pull my pass out of my back pocket only to have the pin come unstuck from the catch, stuck into my jeans then - before it was out of my back pocket - carry on going into my Read the rest of this entry »
